Patrialis to send staff to check for Nazaruddin in S’pore

High-ranking Indonesian officials will depart for Singapore to verify whether or not graft suspect M Nazaruddin, who is also former treasurer of the Democratic Party, is still in the island-state.

“The director general of immigration [Bambang Irawan] will check directly on Nazaruddin’s whereabouts [by going} to Singapore on Saturday,” Law and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar told reporters on Thursday.

Patrialis said his office had not received any letter from the Singaporean government concerning the fugitive Nazaruddin.

“It is good to communicate with the Singapore immigration office. We could then also ask them the next destination of Nazaruddin from Singapore [if he is no longer there],” he said.

The Singaporean Foreign Ministry has said that Nazaruddin left Singapore before the latter was named a suspect in the graft linked to the construction of an athletes’ dormitory for the SEA Games.

Nazaruddin fled Indonesia one day before a travel ban on him was issued.
