Sky-high dining in Bali

The quest for a memorable dining experience has soared to new heights.

Some people choose houses, restaurants or hotels in which to savor their food. Others opt for places near a beach or a river or on a mountain. Still, the search for a more thrilling feast does not stop there.

Nowadays, more than 30 countries around the globe offer Dinner in the Sky, which some people misunderstand as dining in a helicopter. This is certainly not the case.

Try to imagine a specially designed table with 22 chairs under a roof. The table is then pulled by a huge crane 50 meters above the ground. That’s what you call Dinner in the Sky.

Some people consider it too risky, while others find it exciting and breathtaking. As long as you don’t suffer from altophobia, such an opportunity may appeal to you. Besides, all the diners are securely strapped into their seats.

Dining in the sky was introduced in Europe. In 2007, communication agency Hakuna Matata and European crane rental company, The Fun Group, initiated the new experience with the inauguration of 22 young restaurateurs in Belgium.
Since then, the event has expanded to cater to various occasions, such as breakfast in the sky, cocktails in the sky, meeting in the sky and marriage in the sky.

Big cities around the world like Paris, Istanbul and London have hosted such events. Indonesians will soon have the opportunity to have such experience. Ananto Harjokusumo, the owner of PT Luxedestination Twentyten, said his company had acquired the license to hold events in the sky.

He chose Pecatu in southern Bali to hold the first event, which will be called Bali Dinner in the Sky.

”We chose Bali after learning that only a few Dinner in the Sky events have had a beach view. In Pecatu, people will get a beautiful view of the beach, golf course, airport, sunset and fireworks,” he told reporters recently.

Ananto said the idea to bring the event to Indonesia came when he decided to reside in Bali. He surfed the Internet to search for a fresh sensation or experience that could be offered on the Island of the Gods. His mouse eventually clicked on Dining in the Sky and the idea of bring people to dine above the beautiful scenery in Bali occurred to him.

”I want to make something that has not been done by any other Indonesian,” he said.

In order to make the dream come true, he teamed up with Dewi Moesdiono, who has much experience in the event organizing business.

Dewi, who also wanted to stay in Bali, grabbed the chance right away, saying that the event matched her search for a unique experience in Bali.

”I usually take my clients for dinner in various places, but often run out of ideas to give them a new experience,” she said.

The official website of Dinner in the Sky mentions that the event can be held anywhere as long as there is flat open land measuring approximately 500 square meters.

Dewi said she had prepared 2,000 square meters of land for the kitchen, guests, hospitality tent and the like.

”Unlike the Dinner in the Sky in other countries, which is seasonal, we will run this event throughout the year,” she said, adding that she would welcome a partnership with anyone interested in organizing a Dinner in the Sky event anywhere in Indonesia.

Luxedestination plans to cooperate with tour and travel agencies to offer customers a taste of the new experience, which is expected to kick off around November.

Dewi plans to arrange breakfast, cocktail, sunset and fireworks dinners and cooperate with various hotels and restaurants in compiling the menu. The price, she said, would be set at US$50 to $165, much lower than the prices offered abroad.

“Guests will be able to enjoy sunset, the bright lights of the airport’s runway and fireworks while wining and dining,” she said, adding that safety standards for the event would follow European requirements.
